Who Should I Tell?

Just like physical health, it’s essential to look after your mental health if you’re in the military. If you’re worried about having a mental health issue, or if you already have one, you don’t have to tell your chain of command. The choice to share your condition is up to the medical professionals you consult. They’re trained to follow military policies about keeping your health information private. Here are some people you can talk to:

Confidential counselors are available for service members and their families through Military One Source at 1-800-342-9647. They can give you information and advice if you’re not sure whether to seek help for yourself or someone you know.

Primary care providers can help you talk about your concerns and treatment options.

At many military bases, there are behavioral health care providers in primary care clinics. In some cases, there are Embedded Behavioral Health teams that work separately from regular medical facilities.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in a crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
